Three Lyric Pieces

This set of three lyric piano solos offers students the chance to use their interpretive skills and express their artistry. The solos included are "A Leap of Faith," "A Fond Farewell," and "The Kite." These pieces feature expressive melodies, flowing left-hand patterns, as well as scales and arpeggios. Stylistically, these pieces are a hybrid of classical and contemporary, which broadens their appeal to a wide audience. Suggested fingering, dynamics, and pedal are included in the scores.

"A Leap of Faith" begins with broken triads and a simple, syncopated motif. The B section introduces a second motif, and then the two ideas are combined in the final A section. Technically, the left hand offers an opportunity to practice the two fingerings often used for broken triads, while the right hand encourages wrist rotation.

"A Fond Farewell" has a lovely, sentimental melody. It demonstrates variations on a popular left hand pattern as well as legato fingering techniques. The B section offers students a voicing challenge by introducing a second voice in the right hand.

"The Kite" illustrates a kite flying and fluttering in the wind. In the A section, the melody begins at ground level and gradually ascends as the kite climbs higher into the sky. In the B section, the weather becomes more turbulent, causing the kite to whirl and tumble. The melody then descends into the final A section as the kite calmly returns to the ground.
